PITTSBURGH, April 30, 2025 — Duquesne Light Company (DLC) is in the midst of one of its most significant restoration efforts in recent memory after a powerful storm system swept through western Pennsylvania on Tuesday evening, leaving more than 240,000 customers without power across Allegheny and Beaver counties.
The storm, characterized by wind gusts reaching up to 90 mph, caused widespread damage, toppling trees, snapping utility poles, and downing power lines. The National Weather Service reported that these wind speeds are comparable to those of EF1 tornadoes, underscoring the storm’s severity.
In response to the extensive outages, DLC has declared an “all hands on deck” situation. The company has requested mutual assistance from utility partners and is bringing in 400 additional crews to expedite restoration efforts. Despite these measures, officials estimate that full restoration could take between five to seven days, given the scale of the damage.
Tragically, the storm has also resulted in fatalities. In Pittsburgh’s South Side Slopes, a man was electrocuted by live wires during the storm. Additionally, in State College, a 22-year-old man died after coming into contact with an electric current while attempting to extinguish a mulch fire.
Residents are urged to exercise caution and avoid downed wires, broken poles, and other hazards. DLC emphasizes the importance of staying at least 30 feet away from any downed power lines and reporting hazardous situations to their emergency number at 888-393-7000.
