Mohali Imposes Nighttime Blackout: Cinemas, Malls Shut Amid Air Strike Threat

Chandigarh — In light of rising tensions between India and Pakistan, the district administration in Punjab’s Mohali has ordered the closure of cinema halls and shopping malls from sunset to sunrise (8:00 PM to 6:00 AM) until further notice.

Authorities have also imposed a total ban on the use of inverters, generators, solar lights, or any other power backup for outdoor lighting, billboards, and street lights in the district.

Residents have been urged not to leave their homes in the evening unless absolutely necessary. The restrictions, effective May 9, are part of a precautionary blackout strategy amid intelligence inputs suggesting a potential air strike threat from Pakistan.

“In view of the prevailing circumstances… complete blackout may be required during the night hours to safeguard public safety and strategic interests,” read the official order issued by Mohali Deputy Commissioner Komal Mittal.

The use of firecrackers, long-beam laser lights, and DJ lighting has also been banned in the evening hours. Citizens are instructed to minimize outdoor illumination and follow all official guidance in case of sirens or alerts.

The order exempts law enforcement agencies, military personnel, emergency services, hospitals, and individuals authorized by the government.

Any violation of the order will invite strict action under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. (PTI)
