Kharge Alleges PM Modi Cancelled Kashmir Visit After Terror Intelligence Input

Congress chief Kharge alleges PM Modi cancelled his Kashmir visit after intelligence warned of a terror attack, and demands the Centre take responsibility for the Pahalgam incident deaths.

Ranchi, May 6, 2025: Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of cancelling his scheduled visit to Kashmir after receiving intelligence reports warning of a possible terrorist attack. Kharge made this statement while addressing the ‘Save the Constitution’ rally in Ranchi, intensifying the political debate over the recent terror incident in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir.

Kharge Questions Centre’s Accountability

Kharge alleged that despite having prior intelligence inputs about a potential terror strike, the central government failed to ensure adequate security arrangements for civilians and tourists in Kashmir. He claimed, “I read in a newspaper that the central government received intelligence about a terror threat in Kashmir three days before the attack. Based on this, Prime Minister Modi cancelled his visit to the region. However, no extra security was provided for the tourists and locals.”

The Congress chief further demanded that the central government and the Prime Minister should take responsibility for the loss of innocent lives in the Pahalgam attack. He pointed out that the government, in an all-party meeting, admitted to an intelligence lapse, and therefore, must also accept accountability for the tragic incident.

Support for Government’s Action Against Terrorism

Despite his criticism, Kharge reiterated that the Congress party stands firmly with the government in any action taken against terrorism and Pakistan. “The nation comes first. Congress will support every step the government takes to ensure national security,” he said.

Political Reactions and Broader Issues Raised

Kharge also used the opportunity to highlight other political issues, including the need for a caste census, reservation for backward classes in private institutions, and concerns about press freedom and the use of investigative agencies against opposition leaders.

He accused the BJP government of suppressing dissent and targeting opposition leaders through agencies like the Enforcement Directorate (ED). He also condemned the arrest of Jharkhand’s former Chief Minister Hemant Soren, calling it an attack on the rights of tribal communities.

Background: Pahalgam Terror Attack

The recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam has reignited concerns over security in Jammu & Kashmir. The incident has led to sharp exchanges between the ruling party and the opposition, with the latter demanding greater transparency and accountability from the central government.
