Govt Proposes Annual and Lifetime FASTag Passes for Unlimited Highway Travel

FASTag annual pass highway travel India: Govt to launch ₹3,000 annual & ₹30,000 lifetime passes for unlimited national highway use.

New Delhi: In a significant move to streamline toll collection and enhance convenience for private vehicle owners, the Indian government is considering the introduction of annual and lifetime toll passes integrated with the FASTag system.

Key Features of the Proposed Passes:

Annual Toll Pass: Priced at ₹3,000, this pass would grant unlimited access to all national highways and expressways for one year.

Lifetime Toll Pass: For a one-time payment of ₹30,000, users could enjoy 15 years of unrestricted travel on national highways.

These passes aim to eliminate the need for frequent FASTag recharges and reduce congestion at toll plazas. Currently, private vehicle owners can purchase monthly passes costing ₹340 per toll plaza, amounting to ₹4,080 annually, but these are limited to a single toll point.

Integration with FASTag:

The proposed passes would be seamlessly integrated into the existing FASTag system, requiring no additional equipment or documentation. This integration ensures a smooth transition and continued use of the current toll infrastructure.

Rationale Behind the Initiative:

Data indicates that private vehicles account for 53% of toll transactions but contribute only 21% of toll revenue. Moreover, they are responsible for approximately 60% of traffic at toll plazas during peak hours. The government anticipates that these new passes will alleviate congestion and provide financial relief to frequent commuters.

Implementation Timeline:

While the proposal is in advanced stages, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is finalizing the details. Once approved, the passes will be made available to private vehicle owners across the country.
