Indian actor Mukul Dev dies at the age of 54, Film Fraternity Mourns

Veteran actor Mukul Dev dies at 54 after illness. Known for roles in Son of Sardaar, Jai Ho, and TV. Film industry mourns his loss.

Mumbai, May 23: The Indian film industry lost one of its understated yet powerful performers as actor Mukul Dev passed away on Thursday at the age of 54. Known for his deep screen presence and affable nature, Mukul had been unwell over the past few days and was undergoing treatment in the ICU. Despite doctors’ efforts, he could not be revived. The cause of death has not been officially disclosed. He is survived by his brother, actor Rahul Dev.

The news was confirmed by actor Vindu Dara Singh, a close associate of Mukul, who worked with him in the 2012 action-comedy Son of Sardaar.
“After his parent’s death, Mukul became very reclusive. He had stopped stepping out or meeting people. His health took a turn for the worse in recent days. My deepest condolences to Rahul and everyone who loved Mukul. He was an amazing human being, truly one of a kind,” Vindu shared with India Today.

Actress Deepshika Nagpal, who shared a close bond with the actor, took to Instagram to express her shock and grief, posting a photo of them together. “I woke up to this devastating news. I’ve been calling his number non-stop, hoping he’d answer. Still can’t believe it,” she wrote.

Actor Neil Nitin Mukesh also penned a heartfelt tribute:
“Really upset with the sad news of dear Mukul leaving us so soon. A powerhouse performer and a lovely person. My deepest condolences to @RahulDevRising @mugdhagodse267 and the entire family. God be with you during these tough times. Om Shanti.”

Veteran actor Manoj Bajpayee, visibly shaken, tweeted:
“It’s impossible to put into words what I’m feeling. Mukul was a brother in spirit, an artist whose warmth and passion were unmatched. Gone too soon, too young. Praying for strength and healing for his family and everyone grieving this loss. Miss you meri jaan… until we meet again. Om Shanti.”

A Journey Through Cinematic Diversity
Born on September 17, 1970, in New Delhi, Mukul Dev’s career spanned over three decades and touched nearly every major Indian film industry — from Hindi and Punjabi to Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Bengali, and Malayalam. A versatile performer, Mukul brought depth and authenticity to every role, whether it was in a high-octane action flick or a subtle drama.

He made his acting debut with the television series Mumkin in 1996 and shortly after entered Bollywood with Dastak, starring alongside Sushmita Sen. Audiences soon warmed to his charismatic screen presence, and he went on to deliver notable performances in films like Yamla Pagla Deewana, Son of Sardaar, R… Rajkumar, Jai Ho, and Don.

He was equally active on the small screen, earning admiration for his roles in serials and hosting crime series like Fear Files and 21 Sarfarosh: Saragarhi 1897, showcasing a striking blend of gravitas and sensitivity.

More Than Just an Actor
Mukul was not just a creative soul but also an academic achiever. He was educated at St. Columba’s School in Delhi and held a certificate in aeronautics from the Indira Gandhi Institute of Aviation in Raebareli — a lesser-known but fascinating chapter in his life.

Known among friends and colleagues as soft-spoken and deeply empathetic, Mukul preferred a life away from the limelight in recent years. But his contribution to cinema remains indelible.

As the film fraternity and fans come to terms with his untimely demise, one thing is certain — Mukul Dev may have been a quiet star, but his light will shine on through the roles he immortalized.

Rest in peace, Mukul. You were truly one of a kind.
