New Delhi, May 1, 2025 — In the aftermath of the devastating Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives, India has taken significant digital measures, including the blocking of Instagram accounts of several Pakistani celebrities. Among those affected is Hania Aamir, a prominent Pakistani actress and social media influencer with a substantial following in India.
Users attempting to access Aamir’s Instagram profile in India are met with the message: “Account not available in India. This is because we complied with a legal request to restrict this content.” This action aligns with India’s broader strategy to curb content from across the border following the April 22 attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, where terrorists, allegedly linked to Pakistan-based groups, targeted tourists.
Other Pakistani artists whose Instagram accounts have been restricted include Mahira Khan, Ali Zafar, Sanam Saeed, Bilal Abbas, Iqra Aziz, Imran Abbas, and Sajal Aly. However, some profiles, such as those of Fawad Khan and Wahaj Ali, remain accessible.
The digital crackdown extends beyond Instagram. India has also banned 16 Pakistani YouTube channels for disseminating provocative content. These measures reflect escalating tensions between the two nations, with India attributing the Pahalgam attack to Pakistan-backed terrorists.
In response to the restrictions, Hania Aamir shared an Instagram story expressing her concerns. She appealed to the Indian Prime Minister, stating, “Tragedy anywhere is a tragedy for all of us. My heart is with the innocent lives affected by the recent events. In pain, in grief, and in hope—we are one.”
The blocking of these accounts has sparked varied reactions among netizens. While some support the government’s decision as a necessary security measure, others view it as an overreach affecting cultural and artistic exchanges.
As diplomatic relations remain strained, the future of cross-border cultural interactions hangs in the balance. The current scenario underscores the intricate interplay between politics and digital platforms in the modern age.
